Jeseníky mountains bikepacking

11. 11. 2025

The last warm rays of sunshine, damp air, and early darkness. Autumn and winter are coming, and many people are putting their bikes away for the season. But is that really necessary? Can you still ride when the weather gets worse?

Yes. You can. In fact, you can ride all year long. Even bikepacking can be done all year round. It all depends on your desire and resilience.

I take care of my bike regularly throughout the entire season. Before winter, I give it a full service, but otherwise, I don’t “winterize” it. Even though I also enjoy winter sports, winters — even in the mountains — aren’t what they used to be. In recent years, it’s become quite normal to go for a ride even in winter.

“My favorite rides are in autumn. It’s neither too hot nor too cold, and nature shines in all colors.”

Autumn time – how to make the most of it

The first tip is to become an early bird. The earlier you get up and head out into the first rays of sunlight, the longer you’ll be able to enjoy them before they fade early in the afternoon.

If you enjoy your ride for too long, darkness can catch up quickly.

And of course — be prepared. Not just for the dark, but also for bad weather. Always pack lights or a headlamp. If you shine, you’re seen — and that means you’re safe.

Clothing plays a big role

The next tip is about your body — literally. During autumn and winter months, clothing becomes a major factor. Proper layering can help you maintain a stable body temperature throughout your ride or even during a night outdoors. For most of us, keeping our hands and feet warm is key.

These days, I usually wear a long jersey or thermal base layer, and since autumn tends to be windy, I add a light windproof vest. Depending on the temperature, I switch between long and short bibs. I always keep a lightweight windbreaker in my pocket — perfect for descents. Don’t forget quality socks and shoe covers, or even winter cycling shoes. If it’s freezing, I recommend long gloves or insulated winter ones.

(Autumn) Winter Bikepacking

Bikepacking in autumn or winter isn’t a crazy idea at all. Nowadays, it’s a popular activity that doesn’t stop when summer ends. You just need to slightly adjust your gear. The first must-have items are quality bags. Their surface should be waterproof to keep your gear dry in any conditions.

Choose a winter sleeping bag rather than a three-season one — preferably down-filled, as it packs smaller and leaves more room for extra layers or a tent.

Don’t forget to plan your route carefully and minimize sections where you might have to push the bike for a long time. That’s rarely fun — and it can get seriously cold.

We all love to eat

Athletes love good food — before, after, and (ideally) during activity. But we often forget to eat enough while riding. In autumn and winter, it’s especially important to refuel with enough calories and water during your ride. Because of heat regulation, your energy can drop faster, so it’s important to keep your sugar levels up. Pack your favorite bar, gummies, or snack — ideally twice as much as you think you’ll need.

What’s the most important thing?

You’re doing this voluntarily. The most important thing is to enjoy it. Push your limits, explore beauty, take risks — but in a sustainable way. As long as you have a smile on your face the whole time, or even if it comes only after a tough moment, that’s fine. But if you’re frowning from the start and not sure why you’re doing it, maybe it’s time to think it over.
